Embracing the Teaching Profession

I’m Noli R. Dela Cruz a practice teacher from Central Luzon State University, Science City of Munoz Nueva Ecija, Philippines. At first I really don’t like to be a teacher because of my three (3) main reasons. First, I really want to be an Engineer. I strongly believe that I have the passion and the potential to be a good one. In everything that we do, to have a better and best product we should do it with all our heart because this is what we want. We can be the best version of ourselves if we really love what we do. Second, teaching profession requires effort, patience, devotion, dedication and love to teach different pupils with different abilities, attitudes and behaviour. It’s a burden if you will think about it and I felt that time that I’m not fitted to this kind of profession. Lastly, teachers are the lowest paid professionals on the Philippines. It will take you how many years in order for to buy your own car, house and lot and invest to a business. As a teacher you need to invest for your students. The time that is intended for yourself and family will be brought in doing activities, visual aids and lesson plans. The small salary that must intended to your family will be brought in making your classroom conducive for you students, materials that they need etc. it will cost you a lot once you are a teacher.

In 2015, my mother sent me at Central Luzon State University to take Bachelor of Elementary Education major in General Education which I never dream before. She told me that this is the most practical one since we are financially unstable but more than that she really want me to see to become a teacher. To make the story short I enrolled the course. At first it is really hard for me to accept the path where I am. I just come and go to my classes that time. I felt that there is something wrong about my daily routine because that time I don’t have the purpose to continue. Until one day I have this friend who makes me realized something. She told me that there is always reason for everything there is a reason why you took that course there is always a reason why you are here now and having conversation with me. I told her that I want to become somebody in the future I want to be known. And she answered me, if you are a teacher you are somebody, if you are a teacher you will be known. I didn’t understand what she mean that time but I know that there is something that she want me to realize along the process.

As the time goes by, I always think about the statement and I always do my best in my class, in every subject that I have to be an achiever because I really want to make my parents proud. However, I don’t still have the heart to become a teacher. In my 4th and last year in college first semester, this is the time where I will now experience the reality of life of a teacher because of our immersion. All 4th year standing students are required to render at least 17 hours teaching experience in public schools.

The moment I walk inside a classroom, the moment I execute my lesson to them, everything has change. Seeing their eagerness to learn from you, the respect you gained from them, the smile and happiness they had because they learned something about you are all priceless. The attachment and relationship you build as teacher and student is what matters the most. Now, realized that I will be somebody who will serves as bridge to attain their dreams in life and that time I will be known as a teacher who imparted a strong foundation to help my students achieve their dreams in life.

That moment my mind set has change and I discovered the reason why I’m here and the reason why I need to continue. I realized that the future of my students in on my hands that is why I need to give them more than what they deserve. I must find different ways how to maximize my potentials as a future educator. It is the main reason my I joined the SEA teacher project of South East Asia Ministry of Education Organization (SEAMEO) even though we are financially stable. I want to become globally competent teacher who will serve my own country in the near future. I took the opportunity to have teaching experience in abroad which makes me step outside my box and limitation. I believe that this experience will help my future student because they serve as one of my driving force to continue. Always remember that if there is a will there is a way. I can now proudly say now that I’m ready to embrace and to face the field of teaching. Always trust the process and you will also find the reason why you need to continue the fight
